چکیده

This paper reviews the complex ordered structures induced by chirality in liquid crystals. In general, chirality favors a twist in the orientation of liquidcrystal molecules. In some cases, as in the cholesteric phase, this favored twist can be achieved without any defects. More often, the favored twist competes with applied electric or magnetic fields or with geometric constraints, leading to frustration. In response to this frustration, the system develops ordered structures with periodic arrays of defects. The simplest example of such a structure is the lattice of domains and domain walls in a cholesteric phase under a magnetic field. More complex examples include defect structures formed in two-dimensional films of chiral liquid crystals. The same considerations of chirality and defects apply to three-dimensional structures, such as the twist-grain-boundary and moiré phases. Typeset using REVTEX 1

Generation of frustrated liquid crystal phases by mixing an achiral nematic-smectic-C mesogen with an antiferroelectric chiral smectic liquid crystal.

By mixing the achiral liquid crystal HOAB, exhibiting a nematic (N)-smectic-C (SmC) mesophase sequence, with the chiral antiferroelectric liquid crystal (AFLC) (S,S)-M7BBM7, forming the antiferroelectric SmC(a)(*) phase, at least seven different mesophases have been induced which neither component forms on its own: a twist-grain-boundary (TGB(*)) phase, two or three blue phases, the untilted Sm...

On partially frustrated systems

2014 We consider the effects of partial frustration, i.e. frustration in a restricted number of dimensions ; they are investigated in a typical model, the stacked triangular antiferromagnetic Ising model. For this purpose we studied its quantum equivalent, the 2D-triangular model with a transverse field, through finite size analysis. They both exhibit true long range order. These considerations...

Phase behavior in the reentrant-nematic region of chiral frustrated smectic liquid crystals

A high-resolution ac calorimetric study has been carried out on two homologous polar liquid crystals with aromatic cores containing three phenyl groups and a flexible chiral linking group. The expected smectic polymorphism occurs, and there are several prominent thermal features in the nematic range between smecticAd and smectic-C̃ phases. It is suggested on the basis of characteristic thermal s...

Chirality and biaxiality in cholesteric liquid crystals.

We investigate the statistical mechanics of chirality and biaxiality in liquid crystals through a variety of theoretical approaches, including Monte Carlo simulations, lattice mean-field theory, and Landau theory. All of these calculations show that there is an important interaction between cholesteric twist and biaxial order: The twist acts as a field on the biaxial order, and conversely, the ...

Liquids with Chiral Bond Order

I describe new phases of a chiral liquid crystal with nematic and hexatic order. I find a conical phase, similar to that of a cholesteric in an applied magnetic field for Frank elastic constants K2 > K3. I discuss the role of fluctuations in the context of this phase and the possibility of satisfying the inequality for sufficiently long polymers. In addition I discuss the topological constraint...
